one big classroom

building a learning community together

OBC vision

Authentic Inclusion is the appreciation for diversity (whether that be linguistic, cultural, developmental, or academic) and the resolve to invite that diversity into the learning experience.

That invitation must be open one – wherein all participants have a right to voice and agency.  An inclusive learning environment cultivates a sense of security in which students feel safe within the learning process.  Many understand the why of promoting diversity but the how may feel more difficult.  Promoting diversity demands a willingness to accept and nurture exceptionalities, ideas, and methods that may stretch and challenge us.

It is through working in inclusion that I become more involved in safeguarding.  Reaching out to counterparts across the world, it has become clear that schools are seeing the need to do more to ensure their learners are kept safe, both on and off campus.  I have found inclusion and safeguarding to be a natural fit.  Both require us to be attentive, aware of bias, active listeners, and detail oriented with the bigger picture in mind.

Working with others to promote a learning environment that really considers the student is a powerful experience and can lead to powerful results.  Encouraging children and adults to participate in nurturing that environment requires us to work together.

Reach out and connect if you are interested or have a look at some of the projects that have already come to life because of many wonderful partnerships.  One Big Classroom is a labour of love that aims to support you in your journey towards authentic inclusion.
